GX is a show that is all about wasted potential, it's not bad, but could have been much better.Ten years after the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX follows a young boy named Jaden Yuki who, along with his friends, attends Duel Academy, a special institute founded by Seto Kaiba, in the hopes of becoming the next King of Games.

I even suspect them being a leftover from the scrapped Yugioh VS GX movie to work as a counter for Seto. The archetypes are weird too, I don't think I need to talk about Neos, but Cyberdarks also had nothing to do with the Cyber Dragon playstyle, other than being a thematic opposite. The card design during that era was weird, most cards received needless restrictions that had nothing to do with the deck they were played in. Lastly, it could have used more episodes.Ī character's skill is wildly inconsistent, also a lot of duels involve playing very weak cards and making it seem like they are special. The whole revelation that a minor character from season 1 was actually a big bad and that the abandoned dorm plotline never really gets resolved is annoying. Season 4 - The atmosphere is great and so are most of the duels, but the plot is kinda iffy.

Johan saves him from Yubel/Martin, Jim and Austin free him from his own darkness and Ryo motivates him to confront Yubel. And for the first time Judai needs the help of others. It's unironically one of my favorite Isekai's. Season 3 - It takes a while to get going and the season 1 characters are neglected, but the plot and villain are great.

You could remove the other main characters and the plot would stay the same. Another major complaint I have is that again, Judai does everything by himself. The main villain is kinda lackluster, Edo never recovers from being treated the same way as other season 1 main characters the moment he loses to Judai. I consider the Domino City and Genex Tournament arc the absolute low point of GX. Nobody cares that a cult takes over half the school. Season 2 - Again too much filler, even more so than the first season. They should have gone with a tournament arc in the second half of cour 1, like 5D's did to show the other characters do something. Season 1 - Too much filler, Seven Stars are completely unthreatening and too much focus on Judai, I mean he defeats 6/8 of the villain group. Even their cards reflect that, barring Judai and Sho not a single season 1 main character got a new boss monster or strategy past season 2. It's kind of sad really, most of them had great designs and decks, but were sidelined. It's not like their development is bad, only that it came mostly out of nowhere, without any set up during seasons 1-3. Then by season 4 the writers realized that most of them had yet to develop and tried to force it, which was painfully oblivious with Sho, Asuka and to a lesser extend with Manjome. Then during season 3 they are initially replaced by the 4 international students, only to be faux killed off.

Rei despite being treated as a main character during season 3, doesn't have a single (non Tag) full on-screen duel.Īlmost every main character from season 1, is brainwashed during season 2 and only serve as obstacles for Judai to overcome. GX suffers from spending way too much time on Judai.Ĭonsidering how many filler duels there are, it's baffling to me that Asuka's last full single on-screen duel (non Tag) was in season 2. It would have been nice to have some more skilled Obelisk Blue side characters, the only one that comes to mind is Daigo. Great, but not fully utilized, we never really get a sense of progression (Sho progresses each season, but it's completely glossed over) concerning the dorms and most higher dorm students, especially Obelisk Blue appear like total pushovers. I try to keep it short, because I could go on for hours.
